Precision, Perfection, Practice

I don’t ask for this degree of precision from my students but strangely, it is what many of them strive for. My thoughts on this matter : Aim for perfection in everything you do but do not be obsessed. Perfection comes with practice, (PPP), in all aspects of calligraphy, from first mastering a script, to building a page, from the initial planning, right through to putting on that final decoration. Most will never achieve it.  After all my years as a lettering geek I still aim for that perfection, I know I shall never attain it but I sure have enjoyed the journey so far.

By the way, when you do achieve that perfect piece of work, don’t be afraid to ask for top dollar. This watch has a price tag of 2.6 million of them.

The Air Plant

It wasn’t until a few years ago that I had even heard of an air plant. Now they seem to be everywhere, a trendy and low-maintenance plant that doesn’t require soil, evokes something minimal and well-designed. Heck, I even have a collection of them sitting next to me right now. But what the heck is an air plant?

Technically called Tillandsia, the air plant is an evergreen in the bromeliad family. There are over 500 species of the plant, and they grow only in the western hemisphere. Considered epiphytes, they need no soil because water and nutrients are absorbed through the leaves. And while you can see them in the wild clinging to other plants, they’re not parasitic, they only rely on other plants for support.

A Plant A Day Till Spring – Day 1 – Snowdrops

Great idea how to wait for Spring Solstice.

Today is the winter solstice… Today marks the beginning of Winter… To celebrate the occasion… I am dropping the first post of what I hope becomes an annual series… Each post will be devoted to keeping the cold winter days warm through daily doses of the garden… Now… I don’t know about you… But I get pretty depressed during the cold winter months… One of the few things that gets me through this time of year is dreaming of the flowers of spring… This year I have decided to share those dreams with the rest of you…

“A Plant a Day till Spring” will highlight one plant a day, starting on the winter solstice (December 21, 2013)… And ending on the vernal equinox (March 20, 2014)… If all goes to plan I will be starting with old Snowdrop photos from 2013… And ending with new photos of Snowdrops in 2014… This year winter is 89 days……
